Obiettivi formativi

2° modulo: «Epigrafia a teatro.

The course aims at introducing students to the general issues related to Greek epigraphy, in the period between the adoption of the alphabet (8th century BC) and the classical age (5th century BC). In particular, the course intends to provide the basic skills necessary to deal with the reading and historical interpretation of an epigraphic document, paying attention also to its archaeological and topographical context.

2nd part: "Epigraphy in the theatre. The role of theatre and theatres in the Greek poleis through inscriptions" (N.B.: the course will be assigned to a newly appointed teacher. More information on the course will be published later by the teacher himself):
In line with the educational objectives of the Degree Course in Archaeology and Ancient History, this monographic module intends to investigate the role of theatre and theatres in the Greek poleis (and with particular attention to the Athenian area) through inscriptions.
With the term "theatre" we can mean both the whole of the activities - at the same time religious, artistic and civil - connected to the performance of agons and spectacles, and the theatre building itself, which in the Greek poleis was not limited to hosting performances, but played an important role also as a place of political practice. This course intends to present the great variety of themes, subjects and activities related to theatre and theatrical buildings in the Greek poleis as it emerges from the specific analysis of epigraphic documentation (first of all, but not exclusively, from Athens). Through this theme, important aspects of the study of inscriptions will be highlighted, such as: a multidisciplinary analysis (archaeological, textual, historical) of inscriptions, the relationship between epigraphy and urban space, the value of epigraphic publication in its communicative aspects, the documentary value of Greek inscriptions.

  • se lo studente dimostrerà conoscenza dei temi e delle problematiche trattate;
  • se lo studente sarà in grado di esporre i temi trattati con il lessico appropriato e specifico della disciplina;

Acquired knowledge and skills will be verified through an oral exam. The starting point will always be the reading and analysis of an epigraphic document (apograph and/or photography).
The preparation will be considered adequate (with a grade expressed in thirtieths):
- If the student will demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the topics and issues addressed;
- If the student will be able to present the issuess with the appropriate vocabulary, specific of the discipline;
- If the student will be able to autonomously deal with the examination of an epigraphic text, demonstrating in particular to be able to contextualize it in the correct chronological and geographical framework.

Erasmus students may take the exam in French or English.

Programma

Principali contenuti:

  • Passaggio dell’alfabeto nel mondo greco: i Greci imparano a scrivere dai Fenici.
  • Principali alfabeti arcaici: un mondo plurale.
  • Varie tipologie di iscrizioni: epigrafi pubbliche, private e sacre.
  • Strumenti dell’epigrafista: principali repertori epigrafici (cartacei e digitali), guide bibliografiche, sitografia.

2° Modulo: «Epigrafia a teatro.

The course will be devoted to analyze the acquisition of alphabetic writing in the Greek world and the different local alphabets. To this goal, a number of inscriptions considered significant to understand the phenomenon and to illustrate the various archaic scripts will be read, translated and commented. Great attention will be reserved to the contexts of discovery of the inscriptions, to their historical framework and to the societies that produced them.

Content outline:

  • Adoption of the alphabet in the Greek world: Greeks learn to write by Phoenicians.
  • Main archaic alphabets: a plural world.
  • Various typologies of inscriptions: public, private and sacred epigraphs.
  • Tools of the epigraphist: principal epigraphic collections (paper and digital), bibliographic guides and sitography.

2nd part: «Epigraphy in the theatre. The role of theatre and theatres in the Greek poleis through inscriptions»
The programme will focus on the archaeological and epigraphic analysis, reading, translation and historical contextualisation of a heterogeneous set of inscriptions, variously related to the theatre in its double aspect of building and activity. These inscriptions include, for example: chorgic inscriptions, dedications of the agonothetes, decrees related to management aspects, honorary decrees for actors and poets, prohedria seats, abbreviations in theatre sectors and other inscriptions of theatre buildings, inscriptions related to the technitai of Dionysus and to the travelling professionals, public inscriptions of the polis engraved or displayed at theatre buildings, etc. The Athenian context of the late Classical and Hellenistic periods will be the main focus of the course, but epigraphic documents from other areas of the Greek world of particular interest to the topic will also be presented.
The analysis of these documents will from time to time provide the opportunity to deepen related topics of historical-institutional, cultural, or archaeological-epigraphic character (by way of example: the institution of choregia and agonothesia, the associations of the artists of Dionysus, the theatrical buildings as a place of public inscription, political functions of the theatrical buildings etc.).

Note

Knowledge of ancient Greek language is required, even at a basic level.

Given the nature also empirical of the discipline, attendance is strongly recommended.

The delivery method of teaching may be subject to changes pending restrictions imposed by the health crisis. If the teaching activities are not fully resumed face to face, students will be provided with live-streamed lectures and their recordings will be available on the Moodle platform, along with teaching material.
