Obiettivi formativi

  • approfondire metodologie (anche interdisciplinari) di studio che sono proprie delle scienze preistoriche e protostoriche attraverso dei casi di studio specifici;
  • avviare allo studio degli aspetti classificatori e analitici, nonché alla interpretazione del dato materiale come fonte per la ricostruzione di processi storici;

The course aims to provide students with the theoretical and practical tools to pursue a professionalizing path in the field of archeology, both in relation to the general area of heritage protection/conservation and in the specialist sector of prehistoric sciences. In particular, it aims at introducing to the knowledge of historical processes and materials of Italian and European Prehistory and Protohistory. The main objectives are:

  • to obtain notions about interdisciplinary study methodologies that are specific to prehistoric and protohistoric sciences through specific case-studies;
  • to approach classificatory and analytical aspects, as well as learning principles aimed at interpreting the material data as a source for the reconstruction of historical processes;
  • being critically oriented through the different approaches that have characterized the history of prehistoric and protohistoric studies in Europe and Italy.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Students are expected to acquire the ability to classify and frame prehistoric and protohistoric findings and contexts chronologically, and to trace material data back to general processes of historical and socio-cultural interest. Knowing how to orientate through the methods of prehistoric research, in an eminently interdisciplinary perspective, should allow them to start their own autonomous path aimed at conducting a new investigation with autonomy and critical attitude.

Lectures will last 36 hours in total (6 CFU) and will take place with the aid of multimedia (Powerpoint, video).

Except for what is stated in the notes section, with regard to the possible ongoing emergency situation, the students who are not able to attend face-to-face lectures may access live-streamed lectures, and teaching material on the Moodle platform, but not the audio/video recordings of the lectures.

Attendance to lessons is not compulsory but, given the extent of the subject and the complexity of the issues, strongly recommended.

An oral interview, during which questions on general topics will be asked and images of artifacts and archaeological contexts already illustrated during the lessons might be shown, will verify the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Students will be asked to comment on the images and place them in the appropriate frame. The evaluation will be based on the student's ability to articulate the topics, making use of correct scientific terminology. The degree of skill in relating the archaeological data to general problems, the degree of critical autonomy in the acquisition of information and the ability to make connections will also be evaluated.

Programma

  • prime forme di complessità culturale e diversificazione economica (Neolitico);
  • apparizione delle prime forme di differenziazione in ambito funerario (Neolitico Recente -Eneolitico);
  • emergere di insediamenti centralizzati e funzionalmente differenziati (età del Bronzo);
  • origini e sviluppi della metallurgia (età del Bronzo – età del Ferro);

The course includes the examination of some significant case-studies concerning both general and more specific themes of prehistory and protohistory, with particular regard to the periods between the Neolithic and the Iron Age. Examples of archaeological contexts and materials from Italian prehistory will be compared and related to others from various areas of Europe. Particular insights will be devoted to the emergence of situations of social, political and economic change, also analyzed in their theoretical implications, such as:

  • first forms of cultural complexity and economic diversity (Neolithic);
  • the appearance of the first forms of differentiation in the funerary domain (Recent Neolithic-Eneolithic);
  • the emergence of centralized and functionally differentiated settlements (Bronze Age);
  • origins and developments of metallurgy (Eneolithic - Bronze age - Iron age);
  • formation of the first urban and proto-state societies (Final Bronze-Early Iron Age).
