Obiettivi formativi
In linea con gli obiettivi formativi del Corso di Laurea, l'insegnamento si propone di fornire le competenze di base necessarie ad affrontare la comprensione e l'interpretazione storica di un documento epigrafico, con attenzione al contesto archeologico di rinvenimento.
Nello specifico, il corso intende avviare gli studenti alla conoscenza delle problematiche generali relative all'epigrafia greca, a partire dall'acquisizione dell'alfabeto (VIII secolo a.C.) e fino all'età ellenistica.
In observance of the educational objectives of the degree course, the teaching at issue intends to provide the basic skills necessary to deal with the understanding and historical interpretation of an epigraphic text, with attention to the archaeological context of discovery.
Particularly, the course aims to initiate the students to the knowledge of the general topics concerning the Greek Epigraphy, from the acquisition of the alphabetic writing (VIIIth century BC) to the hellenistic age.

Al termine del corso lo Studente avrà conseguito:
- una conoscenza dei principali lineamenti dell'Epigrafia Greca attraverso l'esame di una serie di iscrizioni selezionate;
- la capacità di affrontare autonomamente un testo epigrafico: lettura, traduzione, datazione, commento paleografico, inquadramento linguistico e letterario, interpretazione storica;
- la capacità di comunicare in modo efficace e chiaro, mediante l'uso del lessico specifico della disciplina, le conoscenze acquisite e le riflessioni elaborate in merito ai principali temi e problemi posti da un testo epigrafico
At the end of the course, the student will have achieved:
- knowledge of the main outlines of the Greek Epigraphy through the study of a series of selected inscriptions;
- ability to independently deal with the examination of an epigraphic text: reading, translation, dating, palaeographic commentary, linguistic and literary background, historical interpretation;
- ability to effectively and clearly communicate, through the use of the specialized vocabulary, the acquired knowledge and the reflections elaborated about the principal topics and issues posed by an epigraphic text.

Modalità di insegnamento
Ciclo di lezioni della durata di 36 ore complessive (6 CFU).
L'insegnamento sarà svolto in forma seminariale, con partecipazione attiva degli studenti e addestramento anche pratico alla lettura delle iscrizioni.
Le lezioni prevedono l'uso del videoproiettore. I power points saranno messi a disposizione degli studenti. I testi delle epigrafi (apografi e/o fotografie e trascrizioni) saranno forniti in fotocopia nel corso delle lezioni.
Series of lectures lasting 36 hours in total (6 CFU).
The teaching will be conducted as a seminar, with active participation of students and practical training in reading inscriptions.
The lessons involve the use of the projector. The power points will be available to the students.
The texts of the inscriptions (apographs and/or photographies and transcriptions) will be provided in photocopy during the lectures.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Le conoscenze e le capacità previste saranno verificate attraverso un esame orale. Le domande partiranno sempre dall'esame di un testo epigrafico (apografi e/o fotografie).
La preparazione sarà considerata adeguata (con votazione espressa in trentesimi):
- se lo studente dimostrerà una conoscenza approfondita dei temi e delle problematiche trattate;
- se lo studente sarà in grado di esporre i temi trattati con il lessico appropriato e specifico della disciplina;
- se lo studente sarà in grado di affrontare autonomamente l'esame di un testo epigrafico, dimostrando in particolare di saperlo inquadrare correttamente nell'ambito cronologico e geografico di pertinenza.
The expected knowledge and skills will be verified through an oral examination. Questions always start by examining an epigraphic text (apographs and/or photographies).
The preparation will be considered adequate (with grade expressed in thirtieths):
- If the student will demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the topics and issues addressed;
- If the student will be able to present the topics addressed with the appropriate vocabulary, specific of the discipline;
- If the student will be able to independently deal with the examination of an epigraphic text, demonstrating in particular to be able to insert it in the correct chronological and geographical framework.

Come attività integrativa rispetto al corso è previsto un Laboratorio di Epigrafia Greca e Latina (2 CFU), di cui 12 ore dedicate all'Epigrafia Greca. Esso affronterà gli aspetti più pratici della disciplina mediante esercitazioni presso i principali musei locali.

Programma
Il corso sarà dedicato allo studio dell'acquisizione dell'alfabeto nel mondo greco e delle diverse elaborazioni locali. A tal fine sarà letta, tradotta e commentata una serie di iscrizioni ritenute significative per comprendere il fenomeno e per illustrare i diversi alfabeti arcaici, con attenzione ai contesti di rinvenimento delle epigrafi, alla loro ambientazione storica e alle società che le hanno prodotte.
Particolare attenzione sarà dedicata anche alle diverse tipologie di iscrizioni di carattere pubblico, privato e sacro: decreti, leggi, rendiconti, inventari, contratti relativi all'edilizia pubblica, affitti di proprietà pubbliche, dediche votive, leggi sacre, iscrizioni funerarie, iscrizioni su vasi, maledizioni, lettere.

Passaggio dell'alfabeto nel mondo greco: i Greci imparano a scrivere dai Fenici.
Principali alfabeti arcaici: un mondo plurale.
Varie tipologie di iscrizioni: epigrafi pubbliche, private e sacre.
Strumenti dell'epigrafista: principali repertori epigrafici (cartacei e digitali), guide bibliografiche, sitografia.
The course will be devoted to analyze the acquisition of alphabetic writing in the Greek world and the different local alphabets. A number of inscriptions considered significant to understand the phenomenon and to illustrate the various archaic scripts will be read, translated and commented. Great attention will be reserved to the contexts of discovery of inscriptions, to their historical setting and to the societies that produced them.
Particular attention will be reserved also to the several typologies of private and public inscriptions: decrees, laws, reports, inventories, contracts for public buildings, rental of public properties, votive dedications, sacred laws, funerary inscriptions, vascular inscriptions, curses, letters.Contents:
Adoption of the alphabet in the Greek world: the Greeks learn to write by the Phoenicians.
Main archaic alphabets: a plural world.
Various typologies of inscriptions: public, private and sacred epigraphs.
Tools of the epigraphist: epigraphic collections (paper and digital), bibliographic guides and directories.

Each student, lastly, depending on his/her interests, will focus on an epigraphic text and its context of production. The choice will be made at the end of the course. Then the related bibliography will be provided.
The students not attending the course are invited to contact directly and promptly the Prof. Culasso (enrica.culasso@unito.it). The examination program will consist of the preparation of a selection of inscriptions from the book: M. Guarducci, L'epigrafia greca dalle origini al tardo impero, Roma 1987.
In addition, they have to read the general bibliography indicated above for attending students.
As the attending students, lastly, each student not attending the course will focus on an epigraphic text and its context of production, according to his/her interests. The choice will be agreed with the teacher.

Il corso è destinato agli studenti di tutti i corsi di laurea.
È necessaria la conoscenza del greco antico, anche ad un livello elementare.
Dato il carattere anche empirico della disciplina, la frequenza è vivamente consigliata. Chi fosse impossibilitato a frequentare le lezioni è invitato a prendere direttamente contatto con il docente (enrica.culasso@unito.it).
L'esame non è iterabile. Coloro che intendessero iterarlo sono invitati a frequentare il secondo modulo di argomento monografico.
The course is intended for students of all degree programs.
Knowledge of ancient Greek language is required, even at a basic level.Given the nature also empirical of the discipline, attendance is strongly recommended. If you are unable to attend, you are invited to contact directly and promptly Prof. Culasso (enrica.culasso@unito.it).
