- Si richiede la conoscenza, anche rudimentale, del latino e il superamento di un esame di Storia romana (6 cfu). Chi non possiede tali prerequisiti potrà concordare con i docenti un programma alternativo.
Students should know basic Latin and they should have passed at least one exam in Roman History (6 credits). Students without these preliminary notions can agree with the teachers on a different programme.

Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento concorre alla realizzazione degli obiettivi formativi del Corso di Laurea magistrale in Archeologia e Storia antica, fornendo alle studentesse e agli studenti gli strumenti di metodo specifici per la comprensione dell'epigrafia latina (collocazione spazio-temporale degli eventi, linguaggio tecnico, utilizzo delle fonti), per sviluppare conoscenze specifiche e capacità di comprensione delle tematiche affrontate, affiancate a una capacità di applicarle e di comunicarle.
This course fits with the educational aims envisaged by the MA course in Archaeology and Ancient History, and provides specific skills for the study of Latin Epigraphy: space-time location of events, technical language, use of sources. It provides specific notions and cognitive skills for the understanding of the treated topics, as well as the ability of putting in practice and disseminating the acquired notions.

Al termine dell'insegnamento occorrerà dimostrare di aver acquisito le seguenti competenze nell'ambito dell'Epigrafia latina:
CONOSCENZA E COMPRENSIONE: le coordinate spazio-temporali del periodo considerato, dei problemi proposti e di un congruo patrimonio di termini specifici per la disciplina.
APPLICARE CONOSCENZA E COMPRENSIONE: utilizzare i dati acquisiti al fine di contestualizzare nello spazio e nel tempo temi, eventi e personaggi; essere in grado di leggere, comprendere e commentare le fonti epigrafiche.
AUTONOMIA DI GIUDIZIO: rispondere a domande che mettano in movimento processi cognitivi induttivi o deduttivi; leggere, comprendere e interpretare fonti epigrafiche a partire dalle conoscenze e competenze acquisite.
ABILITA' COMUNICATIVE: utilizzare un linguaggio e una terminologia scientifica; organizzare gli argomenti con efficacia e chiarezza espositiva; stabilire collegamenti, approfondimenti e sintesi.
CAPACITA' DI APPRENDIMENTO: dimostrare di aver acquisito una capacità di apprendimento continuo tramite la consultazione di una bibliografia e di una sitografia aggiornate.At the end of this course, students are expected to have acquired the following skills:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: students will learn the space-time coordinates of Latin Epigraphy, the major problems and the specific terminology of this discipline.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: students will be able to use the acquired skills for setting ancient events and characters in their context; they will be able to read, understand and comment on Latin inscriptions.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: students will learn to answer to questions with inductive and deductive reasoning; thanks to the acquired skills, they will be able to read, understand and comment on epigraphic sources.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: students will be able to properly use a specific terminology, and to organize matters in a clear and effective way; they will be able to establish connections, examine topics in dept and synthesize problems.
LEARNING SKILLS: students will be able to improve their learning ability with an up-to-date bibliography and sitography.- Oggetto:
Modalità di insegnamento
Lezioni frontali della durata di 72 ore (36 ore per ciascun modulo). I materiali didattici saranno caricati nella piattaforma Moodle.
Durante il corso sono previste alcune lezioni presso il Museo di Antichità di Torino.
Alla fine del primo modulo, si svolgerà un viaggio di 3 giorni presso il Parco Archeologico di Pompei, congiuntamente a studenti e studentesse frequentanti l’insegnamento di Archeologia dell’Italia romana (per informazioni rivolgersi anche al prof. Diego Elia).
Fatto salvo quanto indicato nel campo "Note" in merito a un eventuale protrarsi dell'emergenza, alle studentesse e agli studenti che non potranno frequentare le lezioni in presenza sarà assicurata la possibilità di fruire di materiale didattico attraverso la piattaforma Moodle e di sostituire la frequenza delle lezioni in presenza con lo studio del volume sotto indicato, oltre a quelli obbligatori per tutte/i. A tal riguardo, i docenti assicurano supporto allo studio attraverso incontri online (in date da concordare).
Taught lessons with powerpoint presentations (72 hours in total: 36 hours in each module). The handouts of the lessons will be uploaded on the Moodle platform.
This course includes some lessons at the Archaeological Museum of Turin.
At the end of the first module, there will be a 3-day trip to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, jointly with the students of the Archaeology of Roman Italy course (for information please contact Professor Diego Elia).
Except for a possible continuation of the pandemic emergency (see the below warning), students who cannot attend the lessons in classroom may access the handouts through the Moodle platform, and they may replace the lessons with the study of a further book, in addition to the suggested bibliography (see below). For this reason, the teachers will support the study for the exam with specific online meetings (the dates will be posted later).

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Esame orale. Criteri di valutazione: conoscenza degli argomenti affrontati durante il corso e studio della bibliografia indicata; pertinenza e precisione delle risposte; capacità di commentare e contestualizzare le iscrizioni presentate a lezione.
La valutazione finale per i 12 CFU sarà data dalla media tra i voti conseguiti nei due moduli.
Oral exam. Evaluation criteria: knowledge of the topics, and study of the suggested literature; correctness and completeness of the answers; ability to contextualize and comment on the inscriptions that have been presented in class.
The final assessment for the 12 credits will come from the average between the marks of the two parts of the course (module 1 + module 2).

Modulo 1: Lineamenti di epigrafia latina. Origini, sviluppo e funzioni dell'epigrafia latina; strumenti e metodi; il messaggio epigrafico come mezzo di comunicazione e rappresentazione sociale; le epigrafi come strumento per la ricostruzione della storia romana; lettura, comprensione e contestualizzazione delle iscrizioni latine; le iscrizioni di Pompei: istituzioni, economia e società.
Modulo 2: L'epigrafia di Roma repubblicana. Storia e tipologia di iscrizioni (V-I sec. a.C.); lettura e commento di alcuni documenti significativi (elogia, leggi, senatusconsulta); contestualizzazione storica e confronto con le fonti letterarie e i dati archeologici; le iscrizioni campane in età repubblicana.
Module 1: An Introduction to Latin Epigraphy: the birth of Latin Epigraphy; tools and methods; the inscriptions as media and means of social representation; the inscriptions as sources for Roman History; reading, understanding and contextualizing Latin inscriptions; the inscriptions from Pompeii: institutions, economy, society.
Module 2: The inscriptions of the Roman Republic: history of some texts (5th – 1st c. BCE). This module concerns the history of the Roman Republic through the analysis of some relevant documents (elogia, statutes, senatorial decrees). Translated inscriptions, dating back to the Roman Republic, will be presented in class: they will be discussed and contextualized. The course will also consider the role of inscriptions in the study of the Roman Republic, in relation to literary sources and archaeological evidence. Case-study: The inscriptions from Ancient Campania, under the Republic.
