Obiettivi formativi
I modulo (Culasso): In linea con gli obiettivi formativi del Corso di Laurea in Archeologia e Storia Antica, l’insegnamento si propone di fornire le competenze di base necessarie ad affrontare la comprensione e l’interpretazione storica di un documento epigrafico, con attenzione anche al contesto archeologico e topografico del rinvenimento.
Nello specifico, il corso intende avviare gli studenti alla conoscenza delle problematiche generali relative all’epigrafia greca, a partire dall’acquisizione dell’alfabeto (VIII secolo a.C.) e fino all'età classica (V secolo a.C.).
II modulo (Lasagni): In linea con gli obiettivi formativi del Corso di Laurea in Archeologia e Storia Antica, questo modulo monografico intende approfondire alcuni aspetti dell’epigrafia pubblica di Atene, attraverso l’analisi (archeologica, testuale e storica) di una serie di noti documenti epigrafici: in particolare, verrà preso in esame l’insieme dei decreti onorifici conferenti le “massime onorificenze” (le cosiddette megistai timai) a prestigiosi esponenti della polis. Attraverso questo specifico ambito di osservazione, il modulo mira ad approfondire la riflessione sul valore documentario dei decreti pubblici e sulla dimensione multidisciplinare dell’indagine epigrafica, evidenziando le molteplici interconnessioni dei documenti analizzati con la storia politica, istituzionale, culturale di Atene, la topografia monumentale urbana, le fonti letterarie e storiografiche.
1st module (Culasso): In accordance with the educational objectives of the degree in Ancient Archaeology and History, the course intends to provide the basic skills necessary to deal with the understanding and historical interpretation of an epigraphic text, with attention also to the archaeological and topographic context of the finding.
Particularly, the course aims to initiate the students to the knowledge of the general issues concerning the Greek Epigraphy in the long span-time included from the acquisition of the alphabetic writing (VIIIth century BC) to the classical age (Vth century BC).
2nd module (Lasagni) In line with the educational objectives of the Degree Course in Archeology and Ancient History, this module will deepen some aspects of the Athenian public epigraphy, through an archaeological, textual and historical analysis of a number of well-known epigraphic documents: in particular, the group of Athenian honorific decrees conferring the “highest honours” (the so-called megistai timai) to eminent members of the polis will be examined. Through this specific field of observation, the module aims to provide a reflection on the documentary value of public decrees and on the multidisciplinary dimension of the epigraphic investigation, highlighting the multiple interconnections of the documents analysed with the political, institutional, and cultural history of Athens, as well as with the monumental urban topography, and with the literary and historiographic sources.

Al termine del corso lo Studente avrà conseguito:
- La conoscenza dei principali lineamenti dell’Epigrafia Greca attraverso l’esame di una serie di iscrizioni selezionate; la conoscenza di una serie di noti decreti ateniesi, dei profili biografici dei personaggi coinvolti e dei più ampi contesti storici che videro la loro genesi; capacità di comprensione del valore documentario di tali fonti epigrafiche nella ricostruzione di tali contesti.
- La capacità di affrontare autonomamente un testo epigrafico: lettura, traduzione, datazione, commento paleografico, inquadramento linguistico e letterario, interpretazione storica; capacità di affrontare l’analisi di “iscrizioni storiche” complesse, prendendo in esame le diverse possibili relazioni tra lo studio di questi documenti e la riflessione sviluppata dalla disciplina epigrafica su temi quali, ex. gr., il rapporto tra testo e monumento, il valore ideologico dei decreti onorifici, rapporto tra fonte epigrafica e fonte letteraria ecc. La capacità di muoversi con autonomia di giudizio nella dimensione multidisciplinare propria dello studio delle iscrizioni antiche.
- La capacità di comunicare in modo efficace e chiaro, mediante l'uso del lessico specifico della disciplina, le conoscenze acquisite e le riflessioni elaborate in merito alle tematiche e ai problemi posti da un testo epigrafico.
At the end of the course, the student will have achieved:
- The knowledge of the main lines of development of the Greek Epigraphy through the study of a series of selected inscriptions. The knowledge of a series of well-known Athenian decrees, of the biographical profiles of the individuals involved and of the wider historical contexts of their promulgation; ability to understand the documentary value of these epigraphic sources in the reconstruction of the relevant historical contexts.
- The ability to autonomously deal with the examination of an epigraphic text: reading, translation, dating, palaeographical, linguistic and literary commentary, historical interpretation. The ability to deal with the analysis of complex “historical inscriptions”, taking into consideration the different possible relationships between the study of these documents and the reflection developed in the epigraphic discipline on topics such as, e.g., the relationship between text and monument, the ideological value of honorific decrees, the relationship between epigraphic and literary sources etc. The ability to develop personal judgement skills for managing the multidisciplinary dimension proper of the study of ancient inscriptions.
- The ability to effectively and clearly communicate, through the use of the specialized vocabulary, the acquired knowledge and the reflections elaborated about the principal issues posed by an epigraphic text.

Modalità di insegnamento
I modulo (Culasso): Ciclo di lezioni della durata di 36 ore complessive (6 CFU).
L'insegnamento sarà svolto in forma seminariale, con partecipazione attiva degli studenti e addestramento anche pratico alla lettura delle iscrizioni.
Le lezioni prevedono l'uso del videoproiettore. I power points saranno messi a disposizione degli studenti. I testi delle epigrafi (apografi e/o fotografie e trascrizioni) saranno forniti in fotocopia nel corso delle lezioni.
II modulo (Lasagni): Ciclo di lezioni della durata di 36 ore complessive (6 CFU).
L'insegnamento si svolgerà in forma di lezione frontale.
Le lezioni prevedono l’uso del videoproiettore. Le presentazioni e tutti i testi e immagini impiegati per le lezioni saranno messi a disposizione degli studenti in formato digitale.
1st module (Culasso) The teaching will be conducted as a seminar, with active participation of the students and practical training in reading inscriptions.
The lessons involve the use of a video projector. The power points will be made available to the students.
The texts of the inscriptions (apographs and/or photographies and transcriptions) will be provided in photocopy during the lectures.
2nd module (Lasagni):
36-hours course of lessons (6 credits).
Teaching will take place in the form of a frontal lesson.
Lessons will include the use of the projector. The presentations and all the texts and images used for the lessons will be made available to students in digital format.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Le conoscenze e le capacità attese saranno verificate attraverso un esame orale. Le domande partiranno sempre dall’analisi di un testo epigrafico (apografi e/o fotografie).
La preparazione sarà considerata adeguata (con una votazione espressa in trentesimi):
se lo studente dimostrerà conoscenza dei temi e delle problematiche trattate;
se lo studente sarà in grado di esporre i temi trattati con il lessico appropriato e specifico della disciplina;
se lo studente dimostrerà la capacità di affrontare autonomamente l’esame di un testo epigrafico, dimostrando in particolare di saperlo inquadrare correttamente nell’ambito cronologico e geografico di pertinenza.
The expected knowledge and skills will be verified through an oral examination. The examination will always start by analysing an epigraphic texts (apographs and/or photographies).
The preparation will be considered adequate (with a grade expressed in thirtieths):
- If the student will demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the topics and issues addressed;
- If the student will be able to present the topics with the appropriate vocabulary, specific of the discipline;
- If the student will be able to autonomously deal with the examination of an epigraphic text, demonstrating in particular to be able to contextualize it in the correct chronological and geographical framework.

Come attività integrativa rispetto al corso è previsto un Laboratorio di Epigrafia Greca e Latina (24 ore; 2 CFU). Esso affronterà gli aspetti più pratici della disciplina, anche mediante esercitazioni.
As a complementary activity to the course, a Greek and Latin Epigraphy Laboratory is provided (24 hours; 2 credits). It will address the most practical aspects of the discipline, including training activities.- Oggetto:

I modulo (Culasso): Il corso sarà dedicato allo studio dell’acquisizione dell’alfabeto nel mondo greco e delle diverse elaborazioni locali. A tal fine sarà letta, tradotta e commentata una serie di iscrizioni ritenute significative per comprendere il fenomeno e per illustrare i diversi alfabeti arcaici, con attenzione ai contesti di rinvenimento delle epigrafi, alla loro ambientazione storica e alle società che le hanno prodotte.
Principali contenuti:
- Passaggio dell’alfabeto nel mondo greco: i Greci imparano a scrivere dai Fenici.
- Principali alfabeti arcaici: un mondo plurale.
- Varie tipologie di iscrizioni: epigrafi pubbliche, private e sacre.
- (Visiting Professor: Daniela Summa): Storia di Cipro a partire dalla sua documentazione epigrafica. Istituzioni, culti, vita di una comunità multilingue e multiculturale dall'età arcaica alla tarda antichità. Lettura, traduzione e contestualizzazione storico-archeologica e linguistica di documenti significativi provenienti dall'isola.

II modulo (Lasagni):
Il conferimento delle “massime onorificenze” (megistai timai) nei decreti onorifici di Atene: evoluzione storica e istituzionale, contenuti, formule, procedure di attribuzione, significato ideologico, pubblicazione e monumentalizzazione del decreto.
Lettura, traduzione, contestualizzazione archeologica, analisi epigrafica e storica dei decreti ateniesi conferenti le megistai timai, con particolare riferimento al contesto storico e politico di Atene nella prima età ellenistica.
Approfondimento di una serie di temi correlati:
- epigrafia pubblica e spazio urbano: decreti e statue in onore di cittadini
- la comunicazione epigrafica e l’ideologia della polis; la pubblicazione dei documenti: retorica democratica e retorica onorifica;
- epigrafia pubblica e documenti d’archivio; l’uso dell’epigrafia nei testi letterari e storiografici; i decreti onorifici “biografici”; l’uso ideologico del passato nell’epigrafia pubblica.1st module (Culasso): The course will be devoted to analyze the acquisition of alphabetic writing in the Greek world and the different local alphabets. A number of inscriptions considered significant to understand the phenomenon and to illustrate the various archaic scripts will be read, translated and commented. Great attention will be reserved to the contexts of discovery of the inscriptions, to their historical framework and to the societies that produced them.
Principal contents:- Adoption of the alphabet in the Greek world: the Greeks learn to write by the Phoenicians.
- Main archaic alphabets: a plural world.
- Various typologies of inscriptions: public, private and sacred epigraphs.
-(Visiting Professor: Daniela Summa): History of Cyprus starting from its epigraphic documentation. Institutions, cults, life of a multilingual and multicultural community from the archaic age to late antiquity. Some relevant documents uncovered on the island will be read, translated and commented with particular focus also on the historic-archaeologic and linguistic contest.

2nd module (Lasagni): The bestowal of the “highest honours” (megistai timai) in the honorary decrees of Athens: historical and institutional evolution, contents, formulas, legal procedures, ideological meaning, publication and monumentalization of the decree.
Reading, translation, archaeological, epigraphic and historical analysis of the Athenian decrees conferring the megistai timai, with special focus he historical and political framework of Athens during the early Hellenistic period.
Analysis of a series of related subjects:
- public epigraphy and urban space: decrees and statues in honour of citizens;
- epigraphic communication and polis ideology; the publication of epigraphic documents: democratic rhetoric and honorary rhetoric;
- public epigraphy and archival documents; the use of epigraphic source in literary and historiographical texts; the “biographical” honorific decrees; the ideological use of the past in Athenian public epigraphy.

Il corso è destinato agli studenti di tutti i corsi di laurea, anche agli studenti che eventualmente abbiano inserito l’insegnamento di Epigrafia Greca nel loro piano carriera in anni accademici precedenti.
È necessaria la conoscenza del greco antico, anche ad un livello elementare.
L’esame non è iterabile. Coloro che intendessero iterarlo sono invitati a frequentare il secondo modulo di argomento monografico.
Il corso seguirà la modalità: LEZIONE SINCRONA CON REGISTRAZIONE
Ciò significa che il docente sarà in aula e offrirà la lezione tradizionale in presenza. Gli studenti che non possano essere presenti in aula sono pregati di connettersi online e di seguire la lezione in tempo reale con lo svolgersi della medesima. The course is intended for students of all degree programs, also for students who may have included the course of Greek Epigraphy in their career plan in previous academic years.
Knowledge of ancient Greek is required, even at an elementary level.
This module is not iterable. Those wishing to iterate are invited to attend the second monographic module.
